An independence-era African leader wears traditional dress at a state event. A Western brand later uses kente patterns in a collection with no designer credit and no royalties paid. The leader's garment choice was intentional political signaling — communicating cultural legitimacy, rejection of colonial dress norms, and national identity to both domestic and international audiences (Episode 6 framework: ask what it communicates and to whom). The brand's collection fails two of the three markers: credit is absent and compensation is absent. Even if the brand provided a platform for visibility, the missing credit and compensation place this squarely in the category of appropriation as defined by the Episode 9 framework.
