Indigo Science: How the Dye Bath Works
Why does cloth pulled from an indigo vat appear yellow-green rather than blue?
Because indigo must be chemically reduced to leuco-indigo — a soluble yellow-green form — before it can bond with fibre. The blue colour only appears after the cloth is removed and leuco-indigo oxidises back to insoluble indigo pigment on contact with air.
